Sounds are everywhere: from voices to mechanical noises to the sounds of nature, we are constantly immersed in a rich soundscape. (Consideration for those who cannot hear is important.) Students will learn about musical concepts and instrument prototyping, ultimately creating a thought-provoking musical experience for an audience.
In this studio, you will investigate the sonic qualities of various objects and instruments, learning how materiality, shape, and size affect sound. You will also explore the soundscape of your classroom and school, identifying their unique acoustic qualities. After these initial explorations, you will use makerspace resources and recycled materials to invent and prototype your own playable instruments, culminating in a live concert performance for the school! At the end of the project, you are encouraged to present this to an audience, such as an elementary school, a retirement community, or family members.
