01 | Memory Walk + Identity Mapping

Teacher's Guide

Kate James

Before the activity starts:

  • This activity is meant to be a foundation for the studio topic, focusing students' attention on the area of context inquiry.

Throughout the activity:

  • The site walk should be curated by the teacher. Choose a manageable path for the time allotted.
  • You can make periodic short stops at locations that feel like they are close to several possible sites to allow students to check in and do some short sketches and take photos.
  • When the students transition back to class it will be important to have them quickly move into the identity mapping phase of the activity.

At the end:

  • Students should feel inspired by a particular site and aspect of their identity and ready to move into the main phase of the design project.
