02 | Precedents + Brainstorming

Teacher's Guide

Kate James

Before the activity starts:

  • This day involves both precedent research and brainstorming. There are a lot of parts, but students should be able to move through them quickly with guidance.

Throughout the activity:

  • Precedent research is meant to expose students to a variety of existing ideas that exist in the realm of their design work. Here, they will be looking at site-specific design installations.
  • Brainstorming is meant to encourage divergent ideas (to move away from the "first idea, best idea" trap). Try to make this as generative as possible.

At the end:

  • After exploring many ideas, but the end of this class students should be paired in groups (if applicable) and have their main project focus decided.
